Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 may not have launched, but thanks to COD Next, we got a glimpse into what this year’s iteration of the game will look like. And we were impressed… mostly.
The gameplay looked sharp (bar the stream quality), and there have been a number of new additions and tweaks that we think will really improve the overall experience. There was even news that a number of new fan favourite maps will be coming as part of the post launch support.
Sadly, though, not all of what was shown went down so well. And ironically enough, it’s the guns that have come under the most fire. On the Modern Warfare sub-reddit, a lot of people are blasting the weapons’ names and appearances – in particular the BAS-B battle rifle, which is apparently based on the popular ACR rifle.
“These names are atrocious,” wrote one Call of Duty player. “Uh, what’s going on with the ar15 grip on the shotgun stock? Looks like something bubba did in his basement,” added another.
“I thought this was just a visual glitch, I don’t see any way this would work in real life without giant ass hands,” wrote one more. “Most of weapon designs are cursed af. Like bolt action AK,” said another.
Not all of the guns have terrible names though. We noticed this rather fine-looking sub machine gun, modelled on what we believe to be an Uzi, which in the game is called a WSP Swarm. We think this is a pretty cool name as it suits the weapon’s lively and frantic fire rate. The same can’t be said for the BAS-B, which doesn’t really capture any of the character of the weapon and is far more forgettable.
It’s likely that the real gun names are not used as they are registered trademarks and so permission would be required. However, having seen them in action in COD Next, a lot of the look like plenty of fun to fire.
